Fundamental niche: is the range of environmental conditions within which that species can maintain a population that reproduces frequently enough so that the population does not shrink. Does not consider interactions between species or the ability of species to disperse to different patches of habitat - only considers what sets of environmental factors a species can tolerate. Goldilocks fable provides a good metaphor for what happens within a species physiological tolerances. > this concept works better for some groups of organisms than others, eg; bacteria and algae more than mammals and birds, fish more than mammals and birds. Factors that affe(cid:272)t distri(cid:271)ution often don"t a(cid:272)t independently. > light, temperature, oxygen, inorganic nutrients, salinity, ph. > a simple representation of the c3 photosynthetic pathway or calvin cycle. > the calvin cycle is only one of three photosynthetic pathways found in plants.
