271 lecture jan 5: measurement of variables, need a scheme to organize observations. What precise properties to measure or observe. Not possible to record all range extraordinarily large. Best conceptualized as class of similar events: equivalent but not necessarily identical. Group together the similar, but separate the dissimilar: classifying scheme to get better agreement. Red vs. 570 nm variables can have different numerical values: opposite is a constant, essential characteristic of measurements. Ability to assign numbers to represent values. Quantification can assess whether or not a mathematical relationship exists: two major sets of information. Variable to be measured: bring the two systems together so that numbers accurately represent the variable. Fear is a construct: properties of abstract numbers. Absolute zero (true: four scales of measurement. Implications for mathematical / statistical procedures: measurement scales, nominal. Simplest: qualitative differences / identity, mutually exclusive categories, nominal or naming value, the number on a football player"s jersey. Not ordered just different: ordinal.
