Document Summary

Upper limb muscles (reading materials: chapter 11: pages 291-305, 324-327; chapter 22: pages 582-583, 595- Note: to understand the primary function of a muscle you need to understand where the muscle is coming from (origin) and where it is going to (insertion). Upper limb needs to be connected to the body (i. e. axial skeleton) This will be accomplished by series of muscles. Muscles that attach the pectoral girdle to the axial skeleton (these muscles also move the scapula): extrinsic shoulder muscles: pectoralis minor anterior: Insert (from the point of origin): onto the coracoid process. Function: stabilize the scapula and pull it downward and forward on or against the rib cage when it contracts trapezius serratus anterior. Origin: the name is given due to the serrated origin from the upper 8 ribs. Muscle fibres run laterally and backwards around the rib cage and by following the rib cage. Insert: onto the anterior, medial aspect of the boarder of the scapula.
