Superior hypohphyseal artery:
infundibulum and forms 1 cap plexus
that supplies reg hormones released by
hypo that control activity of pars distalis
1 cap forms portal vessels that enter
into anterior pit which gives rise to 2 cap
plexus which supplies all endo cells
Inferior hypophyseal artery: posterior
lobe of pit
Lobes drain into hyophyseal veins
Hypophyseal portal sys: trans hormones
b/n hyp and anterior pit
Thyroid
gland
Just below trachea, 2 lobes connected
by isthmus
Thyroid follicles lined w simple cuboidal
cells (follicular cells), w/n=colloid made
of thyroglobulin (contains Tyr + I
T3/4)
Stores hormones extracellularly, TRH
from hypo stim TSH release from pit
thyroid hormone which increases rate of
metabolism, O consumption, maintains
BP, tissue growth/development
Follicular cells engulf part of colloid
T3/4 cleaved off and secreted into
interstitial enviro, effects all cells except
brain, testes, uterus, spleen, thyroid
Parafollicular (C) cells: b/n follicles,
larger, prod calcitonin- lowers Ca by
inhibiting breakdown of bone and stim
excretion of Ca by kidney

drains via superior, middle thyroid veins
(drains into internal jugular veins) pass
into internal jugular, inferior thyroid
vein (drains into brachiocephalic veins

Chief cells: prod PTH- increases Ca by
targeting bone breakdown and stim
