ANAT 216 Lecture Notes - Lecture 17: Corpus Luteum, Zona Pellucida, Uterine Artery
ANAT 216 week 6 lecture 3
Female Reproduction
function
Prod sex hormones, functioning gametes,
support and protect embryo, birthing
Ovaries/
oogenesis
Paired organs that prod ova (eggs) near
lateral walls of pelvis
5cm long, 2.5 cm wide, 8mm thick and
shrink after menopause
Ovarian lig anchor it to uterus, suspensory
lig anchor it to pelvic wall, broad lig
peritoneum fold that tents over internal
repro structures and stab ovary position
Tunica albuginea: layer of dense CT around
each ovary
Cortex: gamete home, ovarian follicles
- Primordial: one layer of granulosa
cells divides 1 + polar body
- Primary: 2+ layers of cells
- Secondary: antrum- fluid filled space
from follicular cells, zona pellucida-
a glycoprotein layer that protects
oocyte
- Graafian: mature follicle which
ruptures basement memb during
ovulation (day 14) creating corpus
luteum
- Corpus luteum: ruptured follicle
made of large granulosa and small
theca cells, prod progesterone +
some estrogen, degrades if
fertilization DN occur and
progesterone level drops
Medulla: blood vessels, nerves and
lymphatics, outer portion in animals but
inner in humans
Blood supply
Ovarian arteries, ovarina branch of uterine
arteries
Ovarian veins
All travel thru suspensory lig
Uterine
tubes
10-13cm, ciliated/non simple columnar,
muscularis= inner circular and outer long,
then serosa, supported by mesosalpinx lig, 3
tube layers and 3 regions:
1. Infundibulum: fimbriae catch
ejected oocyte during ovulation,
funnel shaped at distal end and
open into peritoneal cavity
