The renaissance folks called it gothic as departed from classical, as negative. Negative association of gothic that through centuries we get modern associations. The invention of one man: abbot suger. Wrote about the act of patronage in detail. Why the art he commissions gets you closer to god. Ambulatory, choir of royal abbey church of st denis, france 1140-44 - abbot suger. Shrines / a place of crowning kings. Where kings come to pay devotions to patron saints, receive blessing. Ambulatory: the aisle that went around the margins of the church, the choir area. Eliminated the walls that separate chapels: an open space that allows for the view of stained glass windows. By looking at the rich, bejewelled, glittering material, we can transcend to see the immaterial.
