Masaccio, the holy trinity with the virgin, st. john the evangelist, and two donors, fresco, ca. Brancacci chapel, with frescoes by masaccio and others, santa maria del carmine, florence: Jan van eyck, the madonnain a church, ca. Jan and hubert van eyck, ghent altarpiece (closed),1432, oil on panel: linear perspective was being developed with heavy bodies and even light. Oil paint is a new development as well, developed by jan van eyck. He developed in the sophisticated way the oil painting as a flexible technique. The oil stays wet for a very long time, but you could thin the pigment to make a translucent layer of paint (glaze). These paintings are made of these many layers of glaze. It takes a long time to dry, so you have to wait for the previous layer to dry before you start with the new one. There is that richness of the colours that is only available through oil.
