The st john baptistery doors are made in florence, the baptistery wanted 2 more doors so they hold a competition for sculptors to see who will make the new doors. 7 applicants participate in the competition and they were given the same amount of bronze to depict the same scene as their own. They needed to depict the sacrifice of isaac only 2 applications survive. Abraham is curving, echoing the curve of isaac. These 2 curves are echoes by the landscape. He conceived his entire panel as one except for his isaac figure. He won the commission bc brunelleschi refused to work with him and share the win. Isaac is scrawny and bony and he is twisted.
