Flanking wings extending into the landscape had practical rather than theoretical or ideological basis. Main fa ade is based on an ancient temple"s but the entablature is broken by garlands decorating a large balconied window that allows the patrons a view over pastures/farmlands. Arcaded wings to either side culminate in large sundials and structures that suggest dovecotes. Semicircular nymphaeum behind the villa has a spring-fed cascade, fish pond, grotto, fountains, extensive sculptural decoration. Elaborate sculptural decoration in stucco add to elegance and focus to the fa ade. Main feature of the pedimental decoration is the barbaro coat of arms (powerful. Sculptural effect of the interior is based on these combinations of flat and rounded forms, decoration is almost eliminated. Convex frieze is devoid of ornament, columns and pilasters unfluted, and leaves of the capitals simplified. Classical fa ade for the difficult shape of a christian basilica, accommodating the difference in height between the side aisles and the elevated nave.
