Byzantine empire wanted to display victory publicly, they looted famous statues and monuments and showed them off in the capital city"s hippodro(cid:373)e. These monuments already were very old and held meanings by the time they arrived in the hippodrome. The western empire was under threat by the barbarians. Rome gets sacked several times in the 400s. They tried to make milan the new capital, however it was too close to the barbarians in the alps. Then they tried nicomedia (turkey) just se of byzantium. Constantine became the roman emperor of the western part in 303 and by 324 he was named emperor of both sides of the empire.
