BIOL 102 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Membrane Protein, Reaction Rate, Post-Translational Modification
Document Summary
Metabolism sum total of all chemical reactions that occur within an organism, also refers to specific chemical reactions at the cellular level. Metabolism is about energy: getting it, using it, to do work! 2 factors govern fate of a chemical reaction. Direction many cells use atp to drive reactions in 1 direction. Rate catalysts called enzyme can speed up the reaction rate. 2 forms: kinetic associated with movement, potential due to structure or location, chemical energy in molecular bonds. Example a diver has more potential energy on the platform than in the water. Climbing up coverts the kinetic energy of muscle movement t potential energy. A diver has less potential energy in the water than on the platform. Entropy a measure of the disorder that cannot be harnessed to do work. Cells create ordered structures from less ordered materials. Organisms also replace ordered forms of matter and energy with less ordered forms.
