Document Summary

Biol102 - lecture 11 - chapter 10, photosynthesis: Must consume organic molecules from their environment to sustain life. Use light as a source of energy. Energy within light is captured and used to synthesize carbohydrates. 6 co2 + 6 h2o + light energy c6h12o6 + o2. ^h2o is oxidized (provides h+ and electrons). Glucose is the energy source produced by this reaction. Oxygen is the byproduct as you are not splitting it to get it and also too much of it can cause problems in cell as it is highly reactive. Also, oxygen as a byproduct get used in motor or just gets washed away. Photosynthesis is not that energy efficient as its efficiency is in the single digits. Solar panels are more efficient, just they can"t pull out carbon and grow. Energy from light drives this overall endergonic (as it starts from low energy) reaction. When enough energy is put into it, the reaction can be exergonic.
