BIOL 103 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Streptococcus, Antibody, Endocytosis
Document Summary
Autotrophs (self-nutrition): harvest light/ chemical e and store in carbon compounds. Can exist in inorganic envt. and manufacture organic compounds. Co2 + h2o --> c6h12o6 (example: plants sunflower) Heterotrophs (other nutrition): not all animals are heterotrophic. Obtain complex food from envt, receive nutrition by eating other organisms, and are found at higher trophic levels (example: humans). Dactylella dreschsleri (fungus) can hold nematode worms through their hyphae, which penetrates the (cid:449)or(cid:373)"s (cid:271)od(cid:455). Digesti(cid:448)e e(cid:374)z(cid:455)(cid:373)es are the(cid:374) released and extracellular digestion (i. e. food is broken down outside cells) takes place. Athrobotrys dactyloides (cowboy fungus) makes traps to capture nematode worms. Nematode enters the trap which is made up of 3 cells. These cells swell and constrict to lasso the worm, and then the hyphae penetrates the worm and ec digestion takes place. Phagocytosis: 85 diff proteins involved in the process in a genus that infects up to 10% of ppl. Endocytosis: various proteins (including snares) and ca+ involved in this process.
