BIOL 103 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Ecological Niche, Aposematism, Capsaicin
Document Summary
Certain species between aurella and caudatum in a mixed population caused caudatum to be driven to extinction. One was slightly better at using the resources and excluded the other species. A species fundamental niche can be broadened if one species is taken out of the environment (barnacles) Stickleback are very wide spread species even in freshwater and seawater (anadromous species) The stickleback males are an exception as they are bright red and take care of the babies (role reversal), the nests can contain many and thousands of female eggs, thus their fitness is very high. The males have a great cost, as they are completely exhausted and many don"t make it out alive at the end of a season. When sticklebacks reproduce, they shed their armour and protective skin. In some lakes there may have been a specialized divergence of the species.
