BIOL 206 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Honey Badger, Crotalus Oreganus, Allopatric Speciation
Document Summary
Snake are eaten by a wide diversity of organisms. Some snakes are not toxic for defence, it"s for predation. Honey badger and mongoose are predators of venomous snakes. A wide variety of organisms have adapted to eat these venous organisms: ie. There is a lot od resistance amoung snakes to venoms of other snakes and their own venom. 1. toxin neutralizing serum proteins: circulate freely in the blood and irreversibly and the toxin molecule and take out of commission. 3. repurposed toxins: grasshopper mice which feed on scorpions, when the scorpions sting the mouse, the mouse have evolved a receptor to induce (numbness which makes it immune, high jacking, repurposing a toxin molecule. 4. acquired immunity: some species aquire immunity to venom. Bill haast was bitten by venous snakes for than 170 times. Everyday by injecting himself with venom daily for over 60 years, he saved countless lives with his antibody rich blood.
