Document Summary

Wave functions (denoted by psi) ; energy state of electrons: energy state is a sub level where one or 2 electrons can reside, energy associated with the state of an electron can be calculated from the wave function, solution of wave functions can be positive, negative or zero, phase sign = whether positive or negative when calculated for given point in space relative to the nucleus. Principles to figure out electron configuration of any atom at any table: aufbau principle orbital fills up lowest energy levels first, pauli exclusion principle max 2 electrons in each orbital but only when spins of the electrons are paired, spin paired arrows opposite direction, unpaired same direction, hund"s rule equal energy orbitals (degenerate); we add 1 electron to each with their spins unpaired until each of the degenerate orbitals contain one electron; then we add second electron to each degenerate so that spins are paired.
