Third punic war (149-146: carthage rich again, so economic threat to rome. Illyria (illyricum) (unknown when it became part of rome) Pergamum: ruled by kings, last king had no heirs when he died, king attalus iii died in 133, willed his kingdom to rome, rome acquired province of asia in 129. Transalpine gaul: romans had been building roads and colonies here, conquests fruitful, so now deliberate policy of expansion and conquest. In 121, romans added gaul to its provinces (transalpine gaul) They had imperium: provincials not citizens, so no appeal. Accountable to the senate, but didn"t much affect them. Not paid, but they had their expenses paid. Immune to prosecution while in the provinces: quaestor (financial minister, legates (civilian attach s) Why: 1) in west rome brought civilization, 2) peace made people happy, 3) government corrupt, but at least stable and orderly, 4) taxes generally less than before, 5)provincials were exempt from military service, 6) laisser-faire attitude.
