Clst 340 Lecture 1 September 9  Office Hours o Tuesday or Wednesday o 11 - 12:30  T.A o Daniel o Office Hours by appointment o [email protected]  Tests o 2 set dates o Midterm 1  Oct 17 - Thursday  Covers all material up to the 10th  Half is fill in the blank  Half is an essay  broad theme  bring in things from the text not mentioned in class  35 % o Midterm 2 (Midterm Proper  Plutarch  Biographies have a moral theme.  Keep this in mind while reading the text and plan ahead.  Nov 14 - Thursday  Essays are apparently rough in this class, don't take them lightly.  15 % o Final  50 %  Essay covers full course  Fill in the blanks covers material not yet tested.  Prehistory of Italy/Rome (The Latins) o Prehistory -- before writing.  Archeology  Linguistics o First people  Settled on Italian Peninsula  Concept of Italy was a long and developed one.  Those who lived in the bay of Latium spoke Latium (Latin)  Latin is an indo-European language.  Indo-Europeans began in Ukraine  Their biblical name is Japhetite  Japhet -- Son of Noah.  Strong bonds of kinship yet still had warfare.  In 2000 B.C Indo-Europeans began going off in different directions.  Sanskrit and Greek are also an Indo-European languages.  Latin est = is  Greek esti  Sanskrit asti  Latin frater = brother  Greek phratres  Sanskrit Bhratir  Iran was once called the Land of the Aereans (earlier name for indo- Europeans).  Some Indo-Europeans went east and became slaves.  Germanic People were called Celts or Gauls o Urnfield Culture  Bronze age culture  People were Indo-Europeans  People had a common language and used most modern apparatuses of the time.  Buried dead by Cremation.  Ashes were placed in urns.  Bicominal urns -- drawing he gave us is two triangles one on top of the other.  They entered Italy around 1300 B.C.  Were the core of Italy's Population.  Those living in Italy at the time could be broken into two major subgroups.  We would call them both Italic  One isthe Latins  The other is the Sabellians/Sabellics.  Also called umbro-sabellian  Mountain People  Kept beating Romans. o Language  Sabellians and Latins had similar dialects but depended on different letters.  Latin is Q italic  Sa
