Drama- tragedy and comedy (Greek)
Great Dionysia was held in march; consisted of tragedy, comedy, and the
dithyramb (hymn) was performed in honour of Dionysus
Rural dionysia
Lenaia was held in January and was only comedy
Festivals, in honor of the Gods, held in March.
March corresponds to the beginning to the sailing season.
Anyone in Athens could go to the theater to watch performances.
Ancient theater- tragedies and comedies were performed only once. Only
one exception where a performance was performed twice**
Performances in the countryside (rural) only comedies were performed
and only citizens of that countryside could attend the performances.
Great dionysia (city dionysia)
The festival lasted 4 days.
Established by Peisistratus during the 6th century BCE
Celebrated by the whole federation of Attics states.
The organization of the festival is under the direction of the arkhlon
Each tragedian had to submit 3 tragedies to the archon aponymos.
The tragedian has also to write a satyr-play
Each comic poets had to submit only one comedy.
When the archon eponymos had chosen, 3 tragic productions and 5 comic
productions allocated to each khoregos, who had to pay for the musicians
and chorus.
Productions were expensive, because at least each performance had
1500 workers, costumes, masks, stage, and scenes.
Theatron- theater (Greek) “seeing place”
20,000 people could fit into the theater, e.g. theater dionysos eleutherios.
Prizes in drama contests:
o 10 judges one from each tribe
o Dramatist: wreath and money
Khoregos: allowed to erect a column in his own honor.
The people who produced the plays did not make a direct income, unless
they won the contest and won money.
The only way of income was if they later sell copies of their play to those
People stayed at the theater for around 10 hours, no intermissions.**
Only intermissions were between one tragedy and another.
If people were not happy they threw stones, and other liquids
Tragoidia (literally a song for the prize of a goat) tragedy.
3 actors, chorus of 12, then 15 persons stichomythia.
