Document Summary

Clst 102 sept 27 th lecture 6. A myth about human condition: hesiod on prometheus, zeus, and the first woman. There is the first woman on earth, pandora (i. e. the giver of all, or endowed with very thing) She is a gift to the humans, and the gods use to give her all gifts. Story is about the relationship between gods and humans. Prometheus likes us, so wants to do something nice for us. Gave zeus all the bones, and us the meat. This explains why men burn white bones at alters. Sacrifice: roasting meat and pouring wine on the altar. Zeus is angry at prometheus, so punishes him. Chains prometheus to a rock and gets an eagle to eat his liver every night. Since he is immortal, liver would just grow back, and then eagle will come back. Herakles is also friendly to us, and frees prometheus.
