Offering of food and drinks: main one, extension of a practice which works between humans: to make friends, make connections, keep connections, fruit of the earth. Animal sacrifice: kill animal, cook it, and share it, not only the greeks that do this: ritualized practice, not casual. Iliad: early source, showing main steps of a greek animal sacrifice: Purify: wash hands, and place is purified. Make connection w/ god (call through prayer) Sprinkle grains on head of animals then kill the animal. Needed to do so, to show it wasn"t a killing like any others. Killing without violence to make the victim express that this killing is good. These killings are dignified and peaceful without violence. Give the gods their share (thigh bones, wrapped in folds off fat) and more meat. Also libation of red wine: pour over meat and fire. Meat burnt and turns into smoke; consumed by fire.
