After residence of one month a non-athenian, greek or barbarous (foreigner) was compelled to register as a metic. Freed slaves were also registered as metics if they stayed in athens. Men had to pay 1 drakhme a month, women half. They had to have a prostates = patron and be registered in a deme. They were not allowed to own real property (land) in attica. Served in the army, took part in festivals, could appear in court. The owner of a shield factory, he became a great writer of court speeches. Slave of a banker, rose to the offi(cid:272)e of (cid:272)hief (cid:272)lerk, (cid:449)as freed for his ser(cid:448)i(cid:272)es a(cid:374)d (cid:271)y his (cid:373)aster(cid:859)s (cid:449)ill acquired the bank. Was also the owner of a shield factory and gave exceptional contributions to the city.
