Main thing: theirs is a direct democracy. The founding principle: there is nothing between the government and themselves, no one represent the athenians, they represent themselves. No prime minister, no administration, no parties: perikles: consider those who want a private life who don"t contribute to the assembly to be useless. Most officials were appointed by lot and their actions were under scrutiny. Their actual power was limited: not much actual power but more responsibility, more of a service than a privilege. 500 councillors chosen by lot, at least 30 yrs old, 50 from each of the 10 tribes. Compensation for the loss of a day of work. So that the poor can do it without financial burden. Place where people made deliberations and decisions. Prepared the agenda for the assembly and drafted preliminary proposals that were then discussed by the assembly.
