Document Summary
Athenians asserted their greekness with reference not to territory but to gods, language, blood, and customs (hellen and hellenic; those who regarded themselves as greek) Mountains and valleys that make communication difficult. Territories could not expand beyond the natural boundaries; rarely did poleis grow to any great size; most settlements lay in the plains where reasonably fertile soil supported various crops. About 3,000 poleis, or cities, in greece. Attica was a large area when compared to other poleis: building stones. Used for building; found easily in all parts of greece except attica. Used for building and fine stone sculpture: clays. Used for the production of baked pottery, roof-tiles, architectural decoration and small-scale figurines; heavy demand for unbaked sun-dried bricks, sometimes used instead of stone in fortification walls and an almost universal building material for houses. Athenian clay turns orange when baked; material basis for black- and red-figure pots: metals. Imported from cyprus; khalkos copper; khalkeus coppersmith.
