We refer to evans as the 3rd generation of archaeology . If we go back to pompeii, at first accidental discovery of beautiful objects led to treasure hunt for more; progress eventually especially with fiorelli. Schliemann: father of archaeology belief that ancient texts based on fact. Ancient sites buried and could be found by excavation. Schliemann discovered whole new world: the bronze age, time of great. Travellers to crete by the 15th c; in the 18th c. lots of tourists. Evans was not the first to excavate here, but he was the most famous. Like schliemann, he benefited from money: except he came from a wealthy family, did not make the money himself, very good at noting and describing things in detail. His father was a businessman, scholar, collected british antiquities. At 20, evans published an article on ancient coins from oxford. At school, only known for one athletic activity: jumping at conclusions .
