Con from last lecture: c. lutatius catulus, cos. 242, aegates islands (western coast of sicily) With rebuilt roman fleet, the consul of 252, c. lutatius catulus, and his fleet were patrolling the waters the western sicily, around the aegates islands, when he came across a large convoy of. Carthaginian ships, all heavily laden with supplies (carthaginians didn"t have good intelligence, didn"t know the roman fleet had been built already). The carthaginians had had enough and now sued for peace. Carthage was to vacate completely the island of sicily. Syracuse would remain independent, as would messana (mamertines) both allies of rome - but the rest of sicily became roman. Sicily now became rome"s first overseas possession and was recognized as rome"s first provincia (latin for a duty) or province.
