Up to end of second punic war. The two roman brothers who went to massilia with the hope of intercepting hannibal were. Gnaeus continued on to spain, which was hannibal"s supply base, while publius returned to italy to meet hannibal. Hannibal took great casualties from his crossing of the alps, both in men and supplies, which included his elephants. The sources differ, but one says he started with 100k troops, another 90k, and another 60k (most would say closest) A roman who ha been captured in the war said that he heard hannibal himself say that he lost 36k men in his crossing of the alps. At the first battle on italian soil, ticinus, publius (consul for the year) was almost killed, but was rescued either by his son, publius, or by a slave. Gnaeus, now in spain was ensuring that reinforcements not reach hannibal.
