Shaft graves are not contemporary with the palaces: shaft graves were stopped being used before the mycenaeans built anything on the acropolis, no architecture to go with them which is super weird. Fortification walls on the acropolis are no earlier than 1400. Circle a is within the walls and circle b is just down the hillside. Schliemann first excavated 5 shaft graves (but there were 6) in circle a: he was searching for evidence of agamemnon"s palace, not trying to learn about the period, so he butchered the excavation. Grave circle b was excavated by the greek government so it"s but better done and we can use it to learn about grave circle a (schliemann) Remember: when schliemann dug at mycenae, evans had not dug knossos so it was unknown that these graves showed minoan influence: evans later realized that all this stuff at mycenae was minoan based on his own excavations.
