Document Summary

How do we learn language : children babble but do not start writing, language is not written but spoken, chomsky: there is a universal grammar and we are born with that knowledge. Creating sentences: shows human intelligence and use of rules syntax, semantics, phonology and morphology. Natural language have evolved and are used by humans. Cross disciplinary research on ai and linguistics focuses on using computational approaches to understand and generate speech in natural language. Four stages of processing: speech recognition, syntactic analysis, semantic analysis, pragmatic analysis. Speech recognition: spoken language is converted to a speech spectrogram showing frequency changes over time, phonemes are extracted from the speech stream, the phonemes are assembled to form words. Analyze individual words in the order they occurred. Analyze the phrase- structure by breaking down the sentence to its hierarchical constituents: the result is understanding how the words are grammatically related in the sentence structure.
