COGS 100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Virtual Reality, Solipsism, Type Physicalism
Document Summary
It is easier to quickly percieve things that are familiar. Reduce search for quick answering -> prioritize memory. We remember the important things and forget the unimportant. Try experimenting w participants from various groups. Fit the data using a mathematical model. Implement a computational model of character recognition. Optical illusions demonstrate how our mind interprets perceptual information based on what we are familiar with and when there is a mismatch it seems confusing. (eg. ames room illusion) Our mind does not see what our eyes see. Metaphysics: the traditional branch of philo concerned w explaining the fundamental nature of being and the world that encompasses it. Mind-body problem (is the mental world part of the material world?) Common problems of the mind addressed by philosophers: the mind-body problem. Monism: the mind andbody are made of the same substence, either mental or physical. We live in a world of virtual reality.
