English reformation was responsible for a three-fold division in english society: church of england majority, catholic and puritan minorities. Catholics and puritans both thought that the church of england were both too much like the other group. Motivation and process was political and centralized rather than spiritual and grassroots. Reformation was driven by the king and his followers, who held more political than spiritual motives. Everyone in england belonged into one of those three groups. Idea matter (how to interpret sacred texts, predestination) Medieval catholicism catholic= universal : ostensibly one church for all christians, tried to create a centralized form of believes. Protestants do not have a hierarchy, there are branches, but they are not centralized. United by the opposition of the catholic church of rome. In practice, this was not true: centuries of dispute culminated in great schism (1054), splitting.
