A cultural critic all his life, perceived on the final authority on what was valuable in literature. Abraham cowley is a poet younger than dunn, who was lumped in with the metaphysical poets. All johnson said about cowley could also be applied to dunn because he would have had these views about cowley too. Appeals to an authority (aristotle) and said that poetry was supposed to imitate nature. Because these poets don"t imitate nature, they are not poets. This is only true if one believes fully in aristotle. Johnson said we could at least appreciate these poets for their wits and imagination. To johnson, wit was not just about verbal prettiness, it was about successfully being able to convey a good idea. Wit was composed of intellect and aesthetic.
