Appeals to an authority (aristotle) and said that poetry was supposed to imitate nature. Because these poets don"t imitate nature, they are not poets. This is only true if one believes fully in aristotle. Johnson said we could at least appreciate these poets for their wits and imagination. To johnson, wit was not just about verbal prettiness, it was about successfully being able to convey a good idea. Wit was composed of intellect and aesthetic.
