Pauline johnson: born 1861, died 1913 born on six nations reserve near brantford, was mohawk, brantford named after joseph brant, american revolution in 18th century, her father part of christian mohawks. Was almost murdered by whiskey traders because he did not want whiskey on the land. He becomes an interpreter until duncan campbell takes over: grandfather traditional, and his son became progressive , pro- assimilation, this tension was part of pauline"s growing up. Sees her father almost beaten to death. Grows up learning mohawk culture/tradition but also british politics. Grows up in a mansion; one door facing grand river, and another door facing the road this becomes a metaphor for her bicultural life. Her father dies, and the family must move to brantford: mother was british she is not part of the mohawk culture. Gave pauline the gift of literature teachers her shakespeare etc.
