Document Summary
Susceptible populations - populations that may be defined as having unique characteristics that make them more susceptible to the effects of pollutants. Pregnant women, infants, young children and older adults have long been recognized as susceptible populations by the scientific community. People with cancer, diabetes, hiv/aids and transplant recipients may have weakened immune systems and thus may also be more vulnerable. Include the economically disadvantaged, racial and ethnic minorities, the uninsured, low-income children, the elderly, the homeless, those with human immunodeficiency virus (hiv) and those with other chronic health conditions, including severe mental illness. The health domains of vulnerable populations can be divided into 3 categories: May warrant separate risk assessments under certain circumstances. In pregnant women, metals like cadmium, lead and arsenic can cross the placenta and may harm the fetus while its neurological and immune systems are in their earliest stages of development.
