The capacity of system (social, ecological etc) to tolerate disturbance without collapsing into a qualitatively different state that is controlled by a different set of processes. Resilient systems can withstand shocks and rebuild themselves when necessary. Resilient in social system has the added capacity of humans to anticipate and plan for the future. Systems is a way of thinking about the world. Flow of resources - food chain or process. Conservation: phase in which slow accumulation and storage of energy and material is emphasized as when a population reaches carrying capacity and stabilizes for a time. Reorganization: occurs rapidly, as when certain members of the population are selected for their ability to survive despite the competitor or changed conditions that are triggered. Exploration: phase of rapid expansion, as when a population finds a fertile niche in which to grow. Release: occurs rapidly (ie. population declines due to a competitor or changed condition)
