Thomas edison opened a kinetoscope parlour in which people can watch films for a nickel. Is interesting that edison"s vision of individual viewer" is only popular now with the iphone etc. Between 1890- 1930, 20 million immigrants came from italy, russia, Many was escaping poverty and findings jobs in usa. With new immigrants moving to the suburbs os america, this quickly made for divided classes. With a society of poor and deprived immigrants, this led to the creation of film makers. Many people who made films, came from where people watch them. Charlie chaplian, william fox (founder of 20th century fox), adolph. Zukor (founder of paramount pictures), the four warner brothers (founder of warner brothers) The urban workers, the immigrants and the poor had discovered a new medium of entertainment without the aid, and indeed beneath the notice, of the custodians and arbiters of middle-class culture . Dozens of movie theatres starting to open in immigrant areas.
