News Lecture Thursday, November 29, 2012 6:33 PM NEWS MEDIA HISTORY News is constructed and communicated differently on different platforms, because each platform has its own limitations and strengths News hole → limited amount of space for actual reportage between all the ads • Ads are the priority because they are what keeps the newspaper in business • Nightly newscasts have 18 minutes worth of news every half hour, the rest is advertisements • Online news sites have more flexibility - Twitter is constrained to limited characters • Each different news format has a different social environment Legacy news brands have an important part in culture • When we hear of bad news happening,we instantly migrate to our TV sets/mobile phones/online to see what's going on News Rituals → how do we consume news throughout the day • Many of us consume the news as soon as we wake up (by reaching for our phones or logging in to Facebook) in order to situate ourselves with what is going on • Also at the end of the day • The weekend newspaper - More time on the weekends - Extra sections - Flyers • We each have our own personal newsworthiness index - We consume news differently at different times in our lives according to different experiences and frameworks of understanding - Different sections of a newspaper are more appealingdependingon your specific situation (you may not read the real estate section unless you are looking for a house/you might not engage with the sports section unless you like sports) - Change over time - News taste can be indicative of your identity Reading the news helps you feel informed and empowered • You feel guilty if you don't read the news Partisan press (political) The first magazines were subsidized by political parties, and they represented the messages and the interests of the parties that were paying for them. • Made by and for the more educated segment of the population • Sold through subscription Penny press (commercial) Advertisements and tabloid news coverage • Designed to lower the price of the newspaper and make them available through methods other than subscription • Democratizing the news - more people were able to read the news and it was fit for many different tastes Newswire (Associated Press), syndicated news content (“canned copy”) Technological advancements (from radio telegraph to newswire services) made things easier • Enabled nationwide news Associated press: 5 or 6 New York magazines assembled to share the costs of covering the war Associated press: 5 or 6 New York magazines assembled to share the costs of covering the war • Print, video, and online available • Cheaper to buy from the AP than to hire a journalist If you rely on the AP, your newspaper becomes a syndicated canned copy: less locally relevant, but potentially awesome content • Potentially turns away an audience who doesn't want to read redundant information through articles they've already seen. News as Fourth Estate: public advocacy, government watchdog New mandate for the news: news reporters were public advocates, where they acted as government watchdogs. Muckrakers, investigative/interpretive journalism, multistep flow Muckrakers: interpretive reportage and investigative journalism • Investigating issues involved with the government and corporate corruption • We don't just want reportage, but we want issues explained to us by people who fully understand what's going on This type of news is reported according to the multistep flow model, where ideas flow from mass media,to opinion leaders, to a wider population. • Mainstream media has an agenda setting effect - If somebody reports on something, it spawns related thoughts on a national scale with the public Fake news and satiric journalism • Typically late night broadcasting programs • Deconstruct the news • Entertaining and divergent - still address the issues, but it's easy to watch • High production values Citizen journalism, participatory news reportage More and more important to legacy news brands given the amount of people that have mobile devices • All major brands have a section where they allow consumers to send in their own pictures, news tips, etc. NEWS REPORTAGE Newspaper audiences are declining every year Migration of credibility Nearly 2/3 of North American audiences think the news stories they read, hear and watch are frequently inaccurate • Migration of credibility from medium to medium (increasingly more accurate stories from paperto television to online) • More convenient - functionally superior • Newspaper circulation dropped in the 60s with the introduction of television, the 80s during the feminist movement, and in the 90s from highly increased internet consumption Broadcast News (TV): immediacy of news images/video We can feel like we're watching the actual event unfold • There is a constant decline and shift away from broadcast news - Live online or in segments online, not on the TV • We'll watch more broadcast news on cable than on network television Online news: easy to share with friends Upskilling and multimedia news production All journalists must have digital production skills - extremely competitive industry. • Legacy print brands have been using video more and more • Legacy print brands have been using video more and more • Newspapers are great for conveying information, but video is emotionally charged with information and experiences - More entertaining - More people prefer to watch the news Morselization of broadcast news Only gives you a taste of the story because of limitations of formats • Keeping videos short to hold audience attention • Reporters tell a complicated story in a short period of time • Online allows you to get more information if you want Infotainment, sensationalism, tabloidization You want to create stories that will stick with people • Bad news, odd news, local news, funny news, celebrity news all have an emotional impact and keep our attention • Most important if you are in the broadcast journalism sector online or on TV - people have the power to change channels or close tabs entirely if they are disinterested - Massive appeal across a variety of perspectives and lifestyles - Short, snappy stories - Eventness will be prioritized over a long-standing issue - Action bumps contemplation (people talking) • Not as crucial for print journalists, because if the audience is disinterested, they will just turn the page, but continue to consume news from the same medium. Criteria for newsworthiness • Timeliness • Proximity • Conflict • Human interest • Novelty • Deviance The most impactful journalism is about being able to tell a story that will connect with people How far that story travels and who it reaches is not based on a fixed distribution system, it's based on who passes the stor
