Document Summary
Like turquoise, a semiprecious stone: rich color, rare that you can see through jade, light is diffuse as it shines through. Valued for its: color and translucence: and texture: almost waxy/watery. Not faceted - doesn"t sparkle: often just polished and made into cabochons. 2 types of jade: jadeite mineral: naalsi2o8, has sodium in it, harder, nephrite mineral: ca2(mg,fe)5si8o22(oh)2, has calcium and magnesium, slightly softer than jadeite variety, come from different areas. Atomic structures both chain structures: chains of atoms --> this is what makes it so tough/hard. Almost feels felted, fibers of minerals are not lined up (easily broken), but instead are intricately woven (hard to break: unlike diamond, has cleavage, but is a felted mass. Tough, can be carved intricately: can make rings, bracelets that wouldn"t break. Polishing and cutting with diamond encrusted blade (won"t actually cut your finger easily)
