Document Summary

Three different sets of approaches of taking biomass and extracting fuels and chemicals. Fast separation and reconstitution: recovering gases that come off from burning, then putting it back together. Biorefining is a mix of bioenergy, biofuels or other bioproducts. Lignin (glue) is 30-40% of a tree. Stronger paper products: never figured out a good liquor recovery cycle, white liquor without lignin, black liquor with lignin. However stronger paper products: problem is chemical itself, as it can be expensive, kraft recovery. Burn black liquor in recovery boiler and add chemical to it, end up with white liquor and energy. Biorefinery due to the energy piece and the material piece (pulp) Chemi-mechanical pulping (bctmp: using refiner plates, grinding wood to get the fibers out, oldest form of pulping, relatively high yield (70-85%) Traditional corn ethanol easier to bring down to its constituents fermenting starches and sugars.
