This week moves away from scholasticism into literature. Shift away from scholastic way of seeing. For many historians this marks the starting point of the modern era. Positive outlook in respect to human potential. Through education humans could fulfil their potential. Renaissance means rebirth- rebirth of classical learning and classical civilization. Humanism (humanismus; studia humanitatis: human studies/liberal arts: poetry, grammar, rhetoric. Essentially a cultural program which appealed to classical antiquity return to ancient sources. What was he humanist critique scholasticism: criticized the rationality and combination of religion with learning. Used different body of sources than the scholastics. Humanist occupied the lesser chairs of grammar scholastics occupied the powerhouse chairs of logic the end of 15th century the humanists began to erode the heavily scholastic universities. Humanists were grammarian while scholastics were logicians. As new universities were founded they tend to focus on humanist curriculum scholastic strain in humanism.
