Commerce a total reconstruction of all human knowledge . Science required a new foundation and bacon"s new foundation became the new pillar, alongside descartes" deductive method. Deductive: assumed first principles from which logical conclusions could be made. Inductive: proceed from the particular to the general. Sense based knowledge that privileges observations and experiment over mathematics. Believed science had gotten mixed up with religious nonsense. Bacon is the flipped side of descartes. Mind does funny things once stimuli are fed to it by the sense. The phantoms (idols) of the mind: senses mixed with emotions, pre-existing biases: upbringing and education, religion, media, common opinion, attachment to dogma and tradition. Necessity of correcting these ->bacon was not a na ve empiricist. Science should contribute to the betterment of civilization. Use human utility and power to conquer nature. Liberating the mind from superstition and supernatural authority. All ideas derive from sensation, reflection, intuition and reasoning.
