The onset of the cold war in the west and of hot wars in the rest. Causal linking of ww1 and the great depression to ww2. The coold war and how it played itself out in the west vis a vis non- west. Fissures in the grand alliance and seeds of future rivalry. Diff. defence concerns conflicting strategic interests and divergent ideological orientations between the us and ussr bode ill to the war time grand alliance against nazism/facism. Avoiding another invasion from western required the soviet union to secure a buffer between itself and the rest of europe. Needed a buffer between them and the powerful west. The allies generally but not always understood and yielded to soviet security concerns. But as early as 1943 the american jcs had decides that defending the us mainland and protecting its interests abroad required overseas military bases and or acess priviledges for easy deployment.
