Document Summary
James kerry nicholls was a british visitor who wandered into an area in new. Zealand"s north island but he thought he was in the british empire rathe he found a sovereign state. He was in an independent maori state in what is still called king country. 1880"s, it occupied over 1/5 of the territory of the north island and had a population of about 7,000. They reserved the right to imprison or kill outsiders who entered their territory without a visa but they had given up war and practiced peaceful resistance to the british. The king country was the last stronghold of a movement that had originated in the. 1850"s to unify the maori into a single state to confront british aggression and stop individual chiefs from ceding maori land. 1861-1863, british tried to destroy this new state but after defeats and inconclusive engagements they sae up and king country gradually settled into uneasy coexistence with the british empire.
