Spanish and portuguese monarchs financed the discoveries that their conquest of the mainland. From the caribbean islands, spanish conquistadores invaded and conquered meso- american and then the andean civilizations under the aztec, mayan and inca polities. Colonial administration units developed into separate territories of spain in the new world. The advent of the portuguese touched off a rivalry. In 1493 pope alexander vi helped resolve their rivalry by dividing the world into two. In 1494 treaty of tordesillas modified that line. Physical expansion on the ground and war led to further re-adjustment and emergence of brazil (as a portuguese colony) Between 1796 and 1808 the british blockaded/controlled the atlantic world. Isolated from the metropole, spanish colonies grew increasingly independent and their economies increasingly integrated to west-dominated global dynamics. Restoration of monarchies in the 1810s coincide with calls and insurrections for independence across latin america.
