Canada at 100, 150, and 158: the historical present, historical memory and counter-memory: foucault, 2017 will mark 100 of vimy ridge and 150 of confederation; mark two historical events that are separated by 50 years. Only make sense if believe that battle of vimy ridge had something to do with the making of canada. Poll done in july of 2011, as combat mission wrapped up, found 30% of canadians found that sacrifice was worthwhile. Question of historical present: it is possible to support military personelle, while at same time being critical of war, includes critical take of canada"s military past. That is something different than right on the paper. Foucaults idea of memory and counter-memory gets us to ask this or that fact, but saying more to it, how and why we"ve come to remember it in the way we have.
