HIST 125 Lecture 1: Lesson 1 from Moodle
Document Summary
So you have enrolled in a course about modern european history. You no doubt have a fairly clear expectation about what you will be studying over the next few months. After all, everyone knows where europe is and the word modern suggests that we will be dealing with recent events. But after skimming through the list of lesson topics, you might be surprised to see that the course takes you hundreds of years into the past. Similar questions emerge when we consider more closely what we mean by europe. after all, Europe is not a separate landmass like africa or australia. If we look at a map of europe we can see that it is bordered on the north by the arctic ocean, on the west by the atlantic ocean and on the south by the mediterranean sea. Within these geographic boundaries live a variety of peoples with distinct languages, customs and regional identities.
