Oldest and most prestigious athletic competition took place at the festival of zeus at the city of elis. Spectators and athletes came from all over the mediterranean world. Ancient greece was made up of many fiercely independent city states, often at war with each other, all wars stopped and peace established during panhellenic games of zeus . At olympia all greeks participated in common language and culture enjoyed elite competition and athletics. No matter where from in greek world, all elites in greek hea(cid:396)d ho(cid:373)e(cid:396)"s epi(cid:272)s. Several hundred polis in ancient greece, each had citadel (acropolis) and a market place and surrounding countryside. Varying government oligarchies, monarchies, democracies and followed own constitutions. Women were citizens in most place but could not participate in politics or own property. In athens, many foreign residents (metics) merchants, bankers and doctors who were accepted because of skills.
