He wanted to keep the fort in union"s hands. Wasn"t going to acknowledge confederacy: he sent supplies only, he sent tugboats carrying the food, and hoped that confederates wouldn"t do anything. If south carolina shot at the boats, then it would be south carolina that started the war, not the union: confederates opened re on the fort, major anderson surrendered the same day. No one was killed in ghting: virginia has the heart of the confederacy, western virginia wanted to remain in the union, but the eastern part of virginia, had lots of slaves, wanted to leave the union. Because they made a lot of money off of the slaves. Because lincoln wanted to invade south and destroy slavery, which would make them lose pro ts: tennessee was divided between leaving or staying the union, eastern side wanted to stay, but the lowlands wanted recession.
