The autocracy: 1913 tercentenary of the romanov dynasty. Nicholas and family travelled on a voyage may 1913 to the birth place of the 1st. Nicholas went to a pavilion of people and was greeted by his people, an ovation, the band played and the crowd sunk to its knees in adoration. Significance: the russian people adored the tsar, they supported the monarchy. Vision of the country, peter the great (1703) Peter had opened a window to the west, he founded st petersburg as the capital, moscow was a medieval city, st petersburg was laid out in a grid fashion, a self-consciously european layout for a city. From the 1st years of nicholas ii"s reign, he looked upon the prior era, the pre- Petrine past (17 century fashion) as a golden era, as it was completely autocratic--> he dressed up in 17th century style costume for the ball with his wife. He has popular support, as well as exercised absolute power.
