Up until the 1850s, paris was still a medieval city, each neighbourhood was its own economy. Baron haussmann as the prefect of paris. Railway system cutting right through the city. 200 000 workers used to demolish 3800 buildings. All the windy streets replaced with big broad streets, open avenues, big buildings (6 stories) Built fountains, public squares, new sewer system, etc. all happening in 10 years. New sewer system created a healthier paris. Made paris much more efficient to travel around for transportation. 350 000 people displaced because of the demolition of paris. The classes use to literally work together; nobles on lower floors, poor people in attic - this was the old paris, all living in the center of paris. Paris was surrounded by a city/suburbs of misery.
